About the Author

Jack Dempsey is just the person to write a book on basic telecommunications. His interests, professional experience and wide array of technical skills and knowledge are the background for this book. HeÂ’s also a master teacher who writes logically and understandably and knows how to uncomplicate the always technically complicated world of telecommunications. Mr. Dempsey had an impressive career before his semi-retirement that spanned 35 years in the telecom field. After receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree, Communications Major; from the University of Illinois, he joined IBM as a Customer Engineer. Following this, he worked at Illinois Bell in a number of rotational assignments mostly related to #5 Crossbar. After an assignment in IBT Transmission Engineering, Mr. Dempsey was transferred to Bell Labs as a member of the technical staff where he further developed #5 Crossbar common control. While on this assignment, he conceived an invention which was later awarded a patent. Later, at Bell Labs he spent a two-year period in a special training program that included rotational assignments working on then avant garde developments at the Labs. Mr. Dempsey also worked at Illinois Bell as District Marketing Manager of data and training. He later became a faculty member of the esteemed Cooperstown Data Communications Training Program. He held teaching positions in marketing, engineering and plant curricula. He was then transferred to AT&T Headquarters, Data Engineering Section. While there, he was primarily involved in wideband transmission design. After this period with the Bell System, he left to join Xerox. His initial assignments at Xerox were with the Communications Product Division and he was appointed Chairman of EIA TR 30.2, the committee that produced the Data Interface Standard, RS-232C. Work on this committee also included joint standards development efforts with ISO (International Standards Organization). Mr. Dempsey participated as a member of the U.S. delegation to CCIIT in Geneva a number of times. He also served as Chairman of an FCC Advisory Committee with the task of devising an acceptable arrangement for direct connection of non-Bell hardware to Bell lines. He was one of the founding fathers of EPSCS, BellÂ’s enhanced CCSA-like network. During its design phase he worked cooperatively with AT&T in defining this service. Dempsey was a member of the Telecommunications Dept. of Xerox for seven of his fourteen years with that company. His responsibilities encompassed both voice and data communications. More recently Mr. Dempsey was Senior National Consultant to Interline, a subsidiary of U S West. In this capacity he was called upon to provide Interline with consultation on a diversity of topics related to telecommunications. In addition, he conducted a number of training sessions. Mr. Dempsey authored two other books on telecommunications beside this one. When Jack Dempsey isnÂ’t writing books, he relaxes with his wife Barbara. He divides his retirement time between St. Petersburg, Florida and the Canadian wilderness. His hobbies are telephony, photograpy and his personal computer which is always close by.
