I have several of Professor Zee's textbooks and have read his book on symmetry as well. In the introduction it claims that this book fills a gap between more technical books like his Einstein Gravity in a Nutshell and the rest of the popular physics for general audience books. I disagree, this book does not provide a bridge to more technical literature, it is very light reading and can be finished in an afternoon if not less. There are a few equations here and there and they seem to be cut and pasted, along with commentary from the author's other textbooks.I found the book overall disappointing and uninformative given a background of having read popular science and started studying introductory relativity books. There are definitely some concepts in general relativity which are tough and i was hoping for some insight of a conversational nature like the author's approach in his textbooks that might fill some gaps. The book is definitely conversational but the content is very light. I don't believe the writing for the non-scientist is as clear as other popular science books and the academic side of this book is non-existent in my mind. I think the writing is clear enough but I don't see this book as fulfilling the author's goals, which is why i bought it. As a first introduction to popular science discussion of gravity it is fine, but was not the intention to my understanding.

Zee confirms himself as an important researcher about quantum physics, because he is always interesting when he talks about the more actual phenomena. They in fact are the Einstein model of relativity, but also the Heisenberg principle and the black-holes in according with the theory of Penrose-Hawkings. The style is very clear and the book can be read speedly, preserving a sure respect of the reality of the theoretical aspects.

Very well written book. Not too technical, and not too trivial.

Only the appendix had a short math overview of the simplest part of the subject - and that was too fast, and short. Expected a more math related approach but instead, a boring talk on the details of general rel - really, who cares? General relativity without math is like going to the dentist to get a tooth without a cavity drilled just so one can have the fun of doing it.

An agreeable, not trivial, first book on General Relativity.Much needed to follow recent advances on gravity waves detection.

Great book on an interesting subject.

Ok. Schutz's book on Gravity is better

I admit it, I am a fan of Professor Zee's writings, both his popular books such as "On Gravity" and "Fearful Symmetry" as well as his textbooks in the Nutshell series. I usually do not write book reviews; yet, I was surprised at the two reviews written for Zee's book "On Gravity". I mean, "Did we read the same book?". Thus my review opinions follow.I was introduced to Professor Zee through his book "Quantum Field Theory in a Nutshell" -- the very first of the popular Nutshell series. I have bought all of Zee's nutshell books. Actually, I have bought all of the nutshell books. The book "On Gravity", though not a textbook, is sort of like a prequel to a textbook on Gravity. I believe the main purpose of this book, at least to me, is to entice, motivate, and encourage a deeper dive into Gravity with a book such as Zee's "Einstein Gravity in a Nutshell" (aka GNut). I have already dived into GNut up thru part II of the book but got sidetracked because of my busy and unscheduled retirement life but I am determined to finish it."On Gravity" is more than a mere popular account of gravity theories and this is clearly explained in the preface to the book. When I first discovered "On Gravity" on a bookshelf in a bookstore I briefly thumbed thru the pages, looking at the various chapters and thinking to myself "I know all this stuff" but instead of putting it down, I bought it because it was a Zee book. I was not disappointed either. This book is a gem because it is full of things that opened my eyes about topics I thought I already knew well. For example, the illustration of Humpty Dumpty, taught me a truth about Least Action and the tension built into the Lagrangian. I first derived the Euler-Lagrange equations 50 years ago but Humpty Dumpty taught me something I had not thought of before. The book is divided into four parts. I see these as Parts I and II preparing the reader to understand Part III (and the appendix). Part IV is the dessert where you get to enjoy the fruits of the labor of Part III. Also, do not ignore the Notes for each chapter -- I believe these notes to be worth the price of the book alone. If you want to know more history or want to go further then don't skip over these notes.I could cite other examples but this review is now approaching my personal word count limit which I have self-maintained since high-school English class. I do recommend "On Gravity" and maybe you too will be motivated to dive deeper.[Note, by accident I did my review on the Kindle version although I purchased the hardbound book]
