It’s difficult to use negative-ish words like “futzy”, “uniform”, and “daunting” to describe Start With Strips by Susan Ache – and still express how outstanding the projects are. But here goes:Nearly every quilt has a sameness to it; some approach tedium and monotony if you think about the sheer numbers too much. Nearly every project uses diagonally-set blocks, sashing strips, and repetition of the same block in alarmingly rigorous counts. Futzy-ness enters with some exacting measurements down to an eighth of an inch. And yet Start With Strips is full of zest and vigor. Susan Ache takes familiar formations and stretches strips to new lengths. Her unconventional results make the book stand far out from the many, many books utilizing pre-cuts. Ache’s use of color and design to re-interpret traditional parts make the sum truly sumptuous.Take, for example, “Airboats” (77 1/8” x 94 1/8”). It is fun and scrappy yet very orderly. It’s sort of an exploded Dresden design, but without the required precision. The advantage to all those sashings around each on-point block equates to no seam matching. Yet it is still quite labor- and attention span-intensive: 128 of the same blocks need to be repeated. Then there is the extraordinary “Stargazing” {81.5” x 81.5”). 23 star blocks are set on point with 184 of same sub-blocks (including mirror images). Templates and 1/8th inch measurements add complexity. Oodles and oodles (56) of setting triangles require careful point matching within each row.The numbers really add up in “Citrus Grove” (72” x 72”). Its zesty use of solids and prints takes your mind off its inherent challenges: stretchy bias and repetition. Nearly 1000 individually cut triangles are required for the 384 half-square triangles. (Which could be vastly simplified using layered and hand-marked speed-cutting/piecing.)~ ~ ~Any special tools needed?~ ~ ~1. Easy Angle (for half-square triangles) OR plastic/vinyl sheet for provided template2. Easy Dresden Tool OR plastic/vinyl sheet for provided template3. Acrylic Ruler with 45-degree markingHighly recommended for all skill levels. Beginner’s will build skills and precision from all that repetition. Sashing strips galore provide a hidden benefit by easing up on exactitude when joining rows. And Susan Ache’s designs will make you overcome and overlook all those daunting numbers.Nice. Really, really nice. Comes across beautifully in Kindle format.

This book seems to be someone's summarized version of Jane Austen's work. Each chapter appears to be shorter and has lost a lot of the descriptive language and detail from the original book. The cover is very pixilated, the text is probably a 12 or 14 point font that looks like something I can print from home. It also claims to have been printied in CA the same day I ordered it.Now I know why it was so inexpensive, yet still a complete waste of my money since I actually wanted to read the entire work of Jane Austen.

This is another of the books in the Austen Project, modern authors retelling the Austen classics. This one even has the same name as the original.Val McDermid is a successful author of crime thrillers, none of which I have read. She accepted the challenge of updating Northanger Abbey and chose to make the heroine, Catherine Morland, into a Twilight-loving, vampire-obsessed teenager. Since I'm not a big fan of Twilight or vampires in general - although I quite like Dracula - that artistic choice made it very hard for me to like Cat, as she is called in the book. She seemed utterly shallow and without substance, and since the book is all about her, that left the plot feeling quite flimsy and frivolous for me.So, we have Cat Morland, sheltered, homeschooled daughter of a vicar and his wife from the little village of Piddle Valley in Dorset. It is a happy, loving family with four children, a brother older than Cat and two sisters who are younger. The family has quite straitened financial circumstances and there's not much chance for travel, so it is very exciting for Cat when their childless neighbors, the Allens, invite her to travel with them to Edinburgh for the summer Fringe Festival. When they arrive in Edinburgh, Cat's world explodes with possibilities. She essentially takes the city by storm. She meets Bella Thorne who, almost instantly, becomes her BFF. Then she finds that Bella has her cap set for Cat's brother, James, who is a school friend of her brother, and she is equally determined that Cat will be paired with that odious brother, Johnny.Soon, Cat also meets handsome Henry Tilney at a dance and loses her heart to him, and she also meets his sister Eleanor, who invites her to come and visit them at their family home, Northanger Abbey. Cat looks at online pictures of Northanger Abbey and is entranced by the idea of it because it looks like a place where vampires might dwell. Arriving at the Abbey, she imagines that the Tilneys are a family of vampires, but the thought doesn't scare her; it only excites her.McDermid actually follows the original plot pretty closely, just changing carriages to cars and letters on paper to emails and texts and girls obsessed with The Mysteries of Udolpho to girls obsessed with Twilight and Herbridean Harpies. She makes a stab at updating the language of the teenagers, but that fell flat for me. Words like "totes" or "amazeballs" - I mean, are those even words? And do teenagers really talk like that? I don't have much opportunity to interact with teenagers these days, so perhaps I'm not the best judge...I really don't have the heart to summarize the entire plot here. There was no one in the story that I felt a connection with, and so even though the book was fairly short, reading it felt like a bit of a slog. I found myself missing the witty dialogue and beautiful language of the original. In fact, I think this book would probably be enjoyed more by someone who has never read the original and so has nothing with which to compare it. I can imagine that it might appeal to the readers of Twilight, for example, and if it could make those readers sufficiently curious about the writings of Austen to pick up the original and read it, that would be the best possible outcome.

I derived little pleasure from the first adaptation in this series (the *Sense and Sensibility* one) or the third (the *Emma* one), but this was a happier experience. Val McDermid did a good job coming up with modern analogues for the original story (e.g., homeschooling to account for Catherine Morland’s extreme naïveté). The dialogue was very well done; I especially appreciated Henry’s wit, which was clever without meanness. And Bella was totally hilarious; she dominated every scene she was in.Henry Tilney is my favorite JA hero (at the moment), so I came prepared to like him in this version, and did. Catherine (Cat) Morland is a little more intellectual in this retelling than in the original—though still without worldly wisdom—leading me to hope that she and Henry might be better suited for the long haul than in the original. If you can improve on Jane Austen, by all means do so!One thing I missed that was in the original was the way JA systematically set up the expectations of gothic romance, only to undercut them over and over with down-to-earth reality. McDermid introduces modern-day gothic analogues, such as Cat’s obsession with vampires, but we simply hear her internal speculations about these elements without having the genre’s clichés so integrally woven into the plot.Speaking of the vampires, I thought that element was taken a bit too far. It wasn’t necessary for Cat to believe they really existed; the story would have worked just as well had she merely thought the Tilneys reminded her of vampires. She had enough fodder for suspicion with regards to the general and his dead wife that she didn’t need to take and hold such a ridiculous idea. Adding in the vampire element simply muddied the revelation scene.Quibble time: I did not appreciate the various coy references to *Pride and Prejudice*. They didn’t make logical sense to me—if Jane Austen existed and published P&P, why would she not have published *Northanger Abbey*, which she wrote before P&P? Just distracting. Another quibble is that I did not really see why Cat and Eleanor (sp? Elinor?) Tilney would have become friends in the first place. Lastly (**spoiler! spoiler!**), I saw no particular reason for Henry to jump right to a proposal to Cat in the end; surely they could have begun by dating.I very much liked the Edinburgh setting, and the vivid descriptions of the abbey and Henry’s house. The story moved along nicely, and gave me a lot of laughs.

17 year old Catherine Moreland enters into society with a splash at Bath, attracting the attentions of both Henry Tilney and John Thorpe. While Mr. Thorpe has a dashing carriage and set of horses and likes to go riding everywhere, Mr. Tilney likes reading the same kind of gothic romances that Miss Moreland does, and moreover lives at that most romantic sounding address - Northanger Abbey!Jane Austen is in her element as she slyly puts her tongue firmly in her cheek in this sendup of gothic romance. It is the first of her six great novels that she sold, but the last to be published. For some reason a publisher paid good money for the book, then did not print it - he had to be sued to return the manuscript! This handsome Kindle edition from Wisehouse Classics has beautiful clear typography and a clickable table of contents. It is an elegant addition to your reading collection and will bring hours of pleasure.

First, let me say that, when I ordered this book, I knew it was copy of the 1946 edition. Please understand that if you order a copy. I ordered it to preserve my original 1946 first edition. However, the material is still valuable today and should be on the bookshelf of any aspiring gunsmith. The original deserves five stars. My problem is with the BNPublishing edition. Even though they claim a 2013 copyright date, the only new material is the cover artwork. Not only that, the actual original contents are incomplete. BNPublishing has chosen to leave out all the unpaginated (and valuable) figures and illustrations, as well as the last six pages of the index. And in producing the facsimile, while enlarging the page size, they have reduced the text size to 96% of the original. Small, but noticeable. My biggest complaint is the use of GLOSS black ink on bright white paper. It makes the book difficult to read under anything but the best lighting conditions. I would recommend finding a good used copy of the original before buying this edition.

I have put much effort into reading gunsmith books, and my view is the "NEW" books are just crap. This book combined with the book by Roy Dunlap, have been the most useful. They are both dated, so if you are interested in fixing an AR, this wont help. However, if you want to learn how to tune a revolver, how guns actually work this is the book for you. Unlike the new works it does not mention brownells catalog on every page, which is nice. It was written in a time when the purpose of a book was to transmit information and not just advertise more products.I have taken the AGI professional gunsmith series and this book seems to follow the premiss of teaching design function and repair.Anyway, I'm surprised to see so few reviews becuase this is a hidden classic.

While this books is obviously around 50 years old (he mentions that "the war" will probably have a negative impact on Germany's gun industry), some information is simply timeless. In these days of CNC and computer-driven milling, this book still contains a wealth of invaluable information. Sometimes there are issues that you just can't fix with your $20,000 lathe, and this book can help explain many of them away. This book has already paid for itself 5 times over in my gunsmithing business, as it's helped me resolve several issues that some of the "new age" smiths in town were clueless about. By the time the customers came to me, they thought their gun was trashed... this book helped save their weapons, and made me some cash in the process! I have no issues giving it 5 stars.

This is one excellent book for a novice and intermediary level gunsmith. Even though it was written in the late 40s or early 50s, this book is NOT, obsolete or irrelevant. It contains a wealth of useful information and actually explains the "why" in addition to "how-to". It covers the fundamentals really well. The only other volume that also deserves a 5 star rating is the book by Roy Dunlap called "Gunsmithing". Get both of these volumes if you are serious about learning the fundamentals. One last thing: the kindle edition costs 10 times less than the hard cover. At the time of this writing it is only $4.74 - imho a steal.

This book is full of useful info even for veteran smiths. It is focused more on operating the business and being a professional in the industry. Not really for the folks that like to tinker on their weapons for fun. I highly recommend you pick up a copy if you do this for a living.

Chock full of information, but really geared toward practical restoration and tuning, A good book, but not really for hard core design / metallurgy etc.

Small print no color pics

Good reference.

From the Author

As an artist, color is a thing of magic in my life. Color creates shapes, forms, and feelings in the artworks I paint. Laying color onto a blank page is when I feel closest to true magic, when I feel happiest and most relaxed, and it's through what I create that I share my love of magic with the world.Through my coloring books I want to share that same magic with you. The artworks in my books are based on my completed paintings, which I have painted over the last ten years as a professional artist. I have created the coloring designs to be intricate and detailed but still fun and accessible. There is something for lovers of meditative detail while simple enough to not be overwhelming for younger colorists. When designing my books I decided to print them with two copies of each design, because I know as an artist there are always so many possibilities! I wanted to give everybody the chance of a do-over with every design, because I also know mistakes can happen, and even the fear of mistakes can hamper creativity. I want you to be able to create without fear! Try a different medium, or a different color scheme. The double pages are also a chance to share the magic with a friend, child, parent, sibling. Because sharing your creativity and joy of color is the best magic of all.

I have most of Selina Fenech's coloring books and grayscale coloring books and I always enjoy her design style. “Goddess and Mythology” is another fantastic book in her series. In this coloring book, there are 25 designs which is great as-is; however, as usual for Ms. Fenech, she gives us two copies of each design. That provides 50 coloring opportunities in this book. It gives me the option of coloring designs two different ways or to share a copy with someone. Either way, it's a good thing. The designs have many details but are not intricate or with tiny elements to color for the most part. There are a couple of nudes with very strategically placed elements so that nothing is showing. I've been playing with shading and have tried adding an element of clothing transparency to some of my more recent projects but that is my design choice rather than anything in the coloring book. While the designs are printed on one side of the page, on the page opposite each design (backside of previous design page) and in light gray print, Ms. Fenech has provided the name of each individual. Along with the name, she has given us a short blurb on the history of the mythology/goddess. I found that extremely helpful as some of these stories were new to me. As I am coloring, I can always look up the name and get a more in-depth explanation but, for the most part, the amount of information provided in the book is sufficient for me.The designs are based on stories from around the world – from Greek and Roman mythology to that of the Vikings to the Far East, from Africa to England. These are the designs that are included in the book: Valkyrie, Blodeuwedd, Diana, The Lady of the Lake, Arianrhod, Aphrodite, Antheia, Athena, Cerridwen, Coventina, Fidelma, Gaia, 2 Wiccan representations, Ishtar, Isis, Nuwa, Selene, Parvati and Shiva, Tempestas, Echo, Guanyin, The Triple Goddess, Oshun, and Rhiannon,This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring mediums I test with and generally use for coloring my projects. For this book, I especially like using alcohol-based markers with colored pencil for shading and depth.25 x 2 each Goddess and Mythology Designs (50 coloring pages)Printed on one side of pagePaper is white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforatedDesigns do not merge into the binding and there is plenty of room to cut out pages if you choose to do so. Most designs have a framing line around the outer edgeGlue BindingAlcohol and water-based markers bleed through the paper to some degrees. Alcohol markers bleed through quickly while water-based bleeds through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. It has enough tooth to get good pigment (especially with repeated layers), layer and blend easily as well. Both wax and oil based pencils worked well with the paper. Hard lead pencils can leave dents through the page.I use and I recommend that you use a blotter page below your work regardless of which medium you use so that ink or dents don't mar the rest of the book. I like card stock of several sheets of heavyweight paper for this purpose.

Artist - Selina FenechPages - 108Publisher - Fairies and Fantasy PTY LTDBookAs with Selinas previous books, Goddesses and Mythology is a subtle deep purple with a partially coloured image from the interior on the cover. The soft matte card cover is 27.9cm x 21.6cm and the book is 108 pages. The spine is glue bound, and quite pliable after some use. The paper is of moderate thickness and texture. A number of layers are easily achieved on the paper, with both oil and wax based pencils. Waterbased markers shadow, any other wet media will bleed. Make sure to have a few pages of standard paper behind the image to catch any bleedthrough.Images are single sided, and surrounded by a border to prevent the image from entering the spine. The facing page has the name of the image for easy reference to the original. This book contains , 25 different images, each one repeated, for a total of 50 images.ImagesI have wanted a colouring book with mythological imagery ever since I began colouring - and this one fits the bill.Selinas style is very consistent, with a delicate, traditional fantasy style that lends itself beautifully to colouring pages. These are no exception, with each image having been either converted from original artwork or drawn for the purpose of this book. One very handy feature is a short paragraph about the Goddess being pictures underneath the name on the facing page. This is very useful for referencing or researching if you want to!Linework is consistently thin throughout, and intricacy is moderate through the book with a good mix of smaller and larger spaces throughout. HealthThe natural colour schemes that accompany these mythological figures and scenes are innately soothing and would be very well suited for times of anxiety or pain, or just a low day.The fantasy theme is one of my favourites when you are in need of distraction, as the imagery and theme is perfect for escapism.Line thickness and intricacy means that those who have vision or fine motor skills impairments may struggle with some of these images, but as always, please do check the images and flipthrough before deciding.Thankyou for reading and I hope you have enjoyed this review,Batgirl xxTaken from my site, ChronicallyBatgirlColours

Goddess and Mythology is my third coloring book by Selina Fenech. Her books have thus far surpassed my expectations each time. Previously I had purchased Marty Noble's Goddess coloring book and was very disappointed with the book because it lacked a more "close up " view , as well as expressions on the faces. That is not a problem here with the 25 Goddesses portrayed in this book. Each Goddess' face portrays a different expression and, it's easy to see the details in each design . Making for a much more enjoyable coloring experience. The 25 Goddesses included are:- 1 Norse- 1 Arthurian- 1 Roman-British- 1 Babylonian- 1 Egyptian- 1 Ancient Chinese- 1 Hindu- 1 East Asian- 1 African Yoruba- 2 Roman- 2 Irish- 2 Wicca- 4 Welsh- 6 Greek Both the Hindu and Wicca are depicted with their male God counterpart.~Each page is a full page design only on one page. The back bottom of the page (left hand side) has the name and origin of the Goddess depicted on the right. In light gray ink.~ The duplicate pages are given in a second book like format. I like this way compared to giving you a duplicate right after the first design.~ the pages are non-perforated. They aren't thin enough for gel pens to go through all the way but some will leave a shadow. Markers and fineliners will bleed through heavily.*Tip I found that using a piece of cardboard from a calendar cover with a piece of heavyweight construction paper works well at protecting pages from bleeding media.~ I like how the author takes the time to explain why she includes two copies of each design , rather than leaving the customer guessing.I would highly recommend this book to others.

I have, at various times, tried to read four different editions of War & Peace (Penguin, Signet, Barnes & Noble, and now this) and by far, this is the best edition I've seen. This edition is everything I was looking for in a copy of War & Peace and I cannot recommend it highly enough.Pros:It is highly readable. Translating texts is always difficult, because you want to retain the feel of reading a Nineteenth century work but use language that makes the work accessible. Personally, I found some editions (Barnes & Noble, Penguin) to be hard to read and comprehend, especially when you first begin. This edition is a relative breeze to read.It has French translations. When reading the Signet edition, I found myself using google translate to understand sentences or phrases left in the book in French. Other editions translated most of the French but left phrases here and there untranslated and in the text, without footnotes. I understand in the original, Tolstoy wrote entire passages in French but provided translations in the foot notes. This edition follows that pattern. There are entire passages in French, but they are translated in the footnotes on the page.It has historical end-notes and an index. I am not unfamiliar with European and Russian history, but I, like most people, have no more knowledge than what I learned in my freshman world history class. This work has end notes in the text to provide context. Though it slows me down, I find myself flipping to the back of the book and reading every end note when the text provides it. I cannot stress enough how helpful this has been. The index is likewise helpful. It is an alphabetical list and short biography of the historical characters and places mentioned in War and Peace. It includes a short chapter summary. At the very end of the book, there is a chapter summary for a collection of chapters sharing a theme or describing the same event. The summary is no more than a sentence long and provides a nice refresher when you are trying to recall what happened when.Cons:Compared to editions that translate all the French, reading in the footnotes can be burdensome. I personally don't mind, but I can see how that might trip some people up.If you are looking for a copy of War and Peace, this is the one to get. Trust me.

It is unlikely that anyone who has the endurance to finish this book would give it a poor review. That would still be true, however, if it were one-third the length. It is, if not the best novel ever written, certainly on a very short list of great works of literature. The beauty of the prose, for me, is the fact that Tolstoy speaks through subtlety. His powers of description are beyond comparison, and in fact there is relatively little dialogue given the length of the book. But the focus of his descriptive powers is not the scenery or the landscape, as is often the case, but the gesture, the look on the face, the social context of the event. This is a subtlety that is lost in our dialogue-heavy, action-packed world today, and is almost foreign to most contemporary authors.Which, in part, also explains why War and Peace seems inapproachable to many contemporary readers. Many of us have lost touch with subtlety and if you are one of those, reading this book would be the greatest gift you can give yourself in the months ahead.“Helene was so good-looking that there was not only not a trace of coquetry to be seen in her, but, on the contrary, it was as if she was embarrassed by her unquestionable and all too strongly and triumphantly effective beauty. It was as if she wished but was unable to diminish the effect of her beauty.” When was the last time you read such a descriptive passage that used so few descriptive adjectives? One of the common criticisms of the book is that the characters often speak in French, which is retained in this translation. This is more true in the beginning, however, and, in total, the French represents a small portion of the total prose. And translation is provided, although the electronic version requires a certain amount of digital (as in fingers) dexterity that I don’t seem to have.Tolstoy, however, is sensitive to the inconvenience and I can’t recall a single passage in which the French was central to either the theme or the storyline. It is mostly there for context, so even if you pass over the short phrases you will miss little other than the full experience that Tolstoy intended. Also remember that French and English are not all that foreign to each other and the most important words in French can be easily guessed by English readers with a little lingual abandonment.Similarly, the complexity of Russian naming conventions need not be the burden it often is to the English reader. Tolstoy most definitely wrote a novel, not a mystery thriller, although he claims that it is not a novel. The storyline is not the book; it serves the theme. That, along with the rich context provided by Tolstoy’s prose, means that you don’t have to recognize each name before you complete the sentence. Nine times out of ten the identity will become obvious before the scene ends. And for that exception there is a handy reference guide. My advice: when you encounter a name that you don’t immediately recognize, read on for a bit before you look it up.As a thematic novel, it is not Tolstoy’s intent to document the Napoleonic wars, although that is the rough timeline of the book. He uses the history more to reveal the cultural themes he seeks to reveal—the culture of the Russian aristocracy at the time. While that culture contrasts sharply with the way in which most Americans are inclined to think of Russia, the themes are quite timeless. There are many passages which could as easily be describing today’s aristocracy—the wealthy elite. As Yogi Berra reminded us, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”Tolstoy is particularly philosophical about war. When I asked a friend of mine who was a Marine veteran who served in the jungles of Vietnam what he thought about the movie, “Saving Private Ryan”, he noted that no one has ever been able to capture the sheer chaos of war on film. Tolstoy, however, does capture it in prose and it is moving without being graphic or overly detailed. You nonetheless feel that you are immersed in the same situational context as the young infantryman thrown about in the chaos of futility and death. In the end, this book easily earns its reputation as one of the best novels ever written. Through his grasp of subtlety and his incomparable ability to build intangible impressions with tangible prose, Tolstoy takes us through the full range of human emotions, accomplishment, and vacuity.Unlike most contemporary authors, Tolstoy actually “tells” us little. As many great novels do, he merely puts themes out there for us to consider and mold to our own experience and our own lives. You will be surprised at how much of yourself you find in early 19th Century Russian characters and events. If not timeless, the insight and the human revelation are universal. As Tolstoy himself wrote, “We can know only that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.”Indeed!

The two stars are not about the book but Amazon's mislabeling of the translation. This Kindle edition is now the Anthony Briggs, not the Rosemary Edmonds translation. I have the paperback version of the Anthony Briggs translation and it matches up perfectly with this kindle edition. I really wish Amazon would do a better job of labeling who translates their Kindle editions, different translations can make all the difference in your enjoyment of the book.
