This book was the main focus of my studies... I have been doing administration for 4 years now, so it was mostly just to fill in blanks. It did well with that respect to things. 1 night of study of this book and one other, and I was good to go. After browsing through the chapter content a bit, I would suggest having a second book available to contrast this book. If you can't really afford it though, go through the book, and take time to actually perform the various functions and examples throughout the book. That should get you ready for the test.Please note that the Linux + is a low-mid level linux test, but does require some amount of time in order to pass it. If you still use Windows or even X for things, you may want to hold off on this test until you are able to gain some experience with a *nix system command line and perform some base administration on that system.Either way, good luck to you!

I have been a casual Linux user for about three years, and a serious student of Linux networking and programming for about a year, so I figured that all I would need to pass the Linux+ exam is a little time with study guide. So I studied this book for two weeks, then went and took the test, and failed. That was my own fault, I didn't apply myself. So I went back, worked through every step of every example in the book, memorized everything I could, and got to the point where I could correctly answer every end of chapter question and scored 89% the first time I took the sample exam included on the CD-ROM. I took the test again and failed again. There were many, many questions on the test that were nowhere to be found in this book, relating to both hardware and software.I'm definitely not saying this is a bad book, because I learned a lot by studying it, and the style is clear and interesting. Mr. Smith's coverage of printing via lpr and CUPS is excellent and made those areas clear to me for the first time, and his coverage of package management was first rate. I'm just saying that if you are looking for a sure-fire way to pass the Linux+ exam you need a lot more than just this book. CompTIA recommends that you take the A+ and Network+ exams before taking Linux+, and based on my experience that seems like a good idea.Or maybe I'm just stupid. But I thought I'd let everyone know.

Bought this for a Linux class. We just used Ubuntu and the book was never helpful. For me this will just be a reference book. I am sure it would be helpful for a person using the Linux Operating System.

I bought this book because I had such good luck with Sybex. I got my A+ and Network+ with the Sybex books. But this one fell short....WAY short. I took the test after reading the book and taking the practice exams; and I also took 2 Linux classes (which is a year of Linux) at my school...and FAILED! I got a 570 (you need a 675 to pass). So I studied again for 3 more weeks and took the test for the second time...FAILED AGAIN! None of the questions on the test were covered in this book; this book is a great starter book. But, if you want to pass I recommend that you buy at LEAST one more book. Also I recommend that you download a Linux distrobution and use it everyday for at least 6 months. I'm going to buy another book, and possibly another one after that. Don't underestimate this test...It's WAY harder than the A+ and Network+ put together. Good Luck!

Currently I'm on the sixth chapter of this book and so far so good. For those who are pursuing CompTIA's Linux+ certification I believe, according to CompTIA, that this book will provide all the help and resources that you need to pass the exam. One qualm though, grammatical errors and a few incorrect verbage.It would have been best that they were omitted. The author uses,"however," and, "though," so much and incorrectly that it makes reading difficult and not very enjoyable. So far I believe his, "however," means, "for example," you can try that and see if it helps, I have not figured out, "though" as yet. "However," if you can get around these quirks, then you'll be rewarded to know that this book is complete for the Linux+ certification and very informative, "though."

Last April I bought this book along with Linux+ 2005 by Jason Eckert to pass the Linux+ exam. I read both books twice over a 4 month period and passed the exam the first time. I am an MCSE and CCNA with minimal Unix/Linux experience, and I was pleased with the background the books provided for the test questions. For me, both books were worth the money and I keep them handy as reference material.

A bit tedious to read; i switch to learning from videos instead.

Content is weak. Sufficient for test, but not much else.

This book was written from ' natural /holistic' perspective. Correcting certain habits can bring back balance where there is imbalance and therefore restore health. Well-written and organized, would recommend to everyone suffering from IBS or simply interested in natural solutions.

Since I knew nothing about this problem, other than wondering if I have it, I found this informative in the symptoms and the treatment. I don't know how accurate the info is but still it was worth the price.

This book had some useful information about ibs and how to deal with it. The only thing about this book was it was short, it should have been longer. I guess you get what you pay for.

Very easy to read and understand. I highly recommend for anyone that has IBS. This is very insightful and gives great tips.

This book has very basic information which can be found online or from a pamphlet from a doctors office. If you have IBS you probably know all of this info already. The book was too general to be helpful.

I don't know how many years ago I first read Robin William's "A Mac is not a Typewriter." It started me thinking from a designer's point of view. I've read several of her books since and recommend them to my students, this one especially.This book is an excellent introduction to typography, and using typography in design for a beginner and a good refresher for the more experienced. Williams explains technical terms with a lightness and ease I envy. She makes good design concepts seem obvious not obscure or difficult. This is an excellent primer and reading it would benefit countless self-trained desktop publishers.

I have no graphic design background, but have always been interested in pursuing it as a hobby and/or freelance opportunity eventually. This has been an incredible resource for me as a beginner.It has tought me tons about fonts, colors, layout ideas, designing business card and other business forms, and so much more, it'd be impossible to list it all. The way the author lays out the book makes all this new information so easy to comprehend, and that is one of the things I like most about the book.I am always going back to re-read and look at ideas and info when I'm working on designing different things.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in graphic design.

I learned a lot from this book. I can hardly believe some of the one-star comments: “pretensious and cocky,” "no help,” “written for a 3-year old.” I did not see any of that. If you didn’t attend graphic design school and want to make your designs ten times better, this book is amazing. The author breaks down four simple concepts and then shows you step-by-step examples to help you to apply those concepts. I’ve been looking for a book like this for years because I wanted to understand design better without needing a degree and I can see how the concepts could apply to other areas of visual design as well. This book also has font tips—wow—which have totally changed my typing life. Great book.

If you need to do graphic design and are not professionally trained, buy this book and read it. It was a fast, easy read with lots of before/after pictures to illustrate applying the principles she teaches. My own work has improved dramatically after doing this work. I was a competent amateur, but now what I'm producing looks better, and I have the words to explain how and why it is better. This book was worth every penny, and it's not particularly expensive to begin with.

This is an awesome book. The author clearly builds on proper design principles using outstanding examples of poorly and properly designed bulletins, personal stationary, postcards, resumes, etc. Although I have been using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign (formerly Pagemaker for years), I have a lot to learn about graphic design. Considerable emphasis is placed on the focus for the particular design followed by four easily understood design principles. The last one-half of the book concerns use of type.The book does not and should not teach specific brand-name computer applications.This is one great book. Seriously. I highly recommend the book to any beginner or low intermediate designer. Thank you very much.

Pretty good book for the novice designer and it will improve your design skills after applying the principles in the book. Easy to read, follow and understand, it also has good tips and tricks to make your design work look better and more professional. The chapter on color is really good and the chapter on fonts shows you there's more to a font than meets the eye. Highly recommended if you have no design background and need to do your own newsletters, flyers etc.

As someone prepping for a continuing ed design program, I wanted to get my hands on some basic knowledge of graphic design. This book is exactly what I needed, and covers the principles of design in short, sweet, and accurate detail. Coming from a more technical background I appreciate how succinct this book is and clearly lays out the point and purpose of what you need to accomplish.You won't come away as a design master from this book, but it is a wonderful intro to the field of graphic design principles and I would highly recommend it for newbies, or those simply interested in learning graphic design principles for their own personal projects.

I am a software developer, and I have always felt sort of oblivious to anything involving aesthetics. I've been fortunate to work with good designers, but I decided it was time to learn a bit for myself. I asked a designer colleague for a book recommendation, and she suggested this one.It was perfect for me. The book focuses on design as a means a effective communication rather than just a way to make pretty things, and that works a lot better for my brain. The examples are very clear, and the iterative improvements from one design to the next are so clear that even I can tell that they look better (and understand why). The writing is equally effective and easy to consume. It only took me 4-5 hours for my first pass through this book.After finishing the book tonight, I set out to improve my resume. 90 minutes later, I'm shocked with the results. I used to think my old one looked fine, but now I can see so many design flaws in it. The new version, well, I'm sure there's still plenty wrong with it, but looks better than anything I thought I'd ever create on my own.

Great to see an update of this book. The first edition really helped me learn and understand the principles of graphic design. If you work through this book, and apply the design principles to your work, you will definitely learn something about graphic design. Robin Williams also adds a lot of new material to the fourth edition, so you're not really buying the same book again. I'm looking forward to working though this edition as well.

Having devoured the other books in this series, I waited like someone starving for the final installment. And all the waiting was worth it!Throughout the middle books' portrayal of star crossed lovers Robert and Charlotte after they were separated at the end of the Great War, I always figured they would meet again someday. But as always Griffis, while writing of the decency and fidelity of both, shows readers a darker side of humanity.The setting for this show of darkness, apathy and sometimes downright cruelty, is 1930s Hollywood California. There we meet movie moguls with little care for their stunt double employees or set animals (horses, elephants and others), but we also find a movie star, who with all his flaws, is an uncommonly decent human being.The supporting characters are mostly delightful, including the animals. Griffis has a real gift when writing of animals, both wild and domesticated. The animals are characters in themselves, especially Liberté the eagle and Sadie, the little zoo elephant.I loved this book and the entire series, and I'm sad to see it end. The good thing is that these are books I will read again and again. I highly recommend the By the Hands of Men Series. Begin at the beginning. You'll be hooked with the first chapter, and you'll never be sorry.

This book is the conclusion of a fascinating & immaculately researched 6-book historical series which often reveals the darkest side of human nature. The “By the Hands of Men” saga takes the reader from the trenches of WWI, by way of Africa & Russia, to the hardscrabble days of the Great Depression in the U.S., presenting insights into the mindless cruelty of Hollywood movie-making before the animals (& people) used in films were protected & where we even meet the dashing enigma of Errol Flynn! During the almost twenty years that their lives diverged, enormous suffering was witnessed & endured by both protagonists, Charlotte & Richard, but during the entirety of that difficult time they never stopped longing for one another. Now the star-crossed couple, the intrepid British officer & the courageous Russian nurse, find themselves on the same continent once again at last! Roy Griffis is a wonderful storyteller with a tremendous talent for capturing history & the marvelous ability to bring his characters, some evil, many eccentric, most engaging, to life. A heartwarming end to a fascinating saga; not to be missed!Although each book is an adventure entirely separate from the narrative arc, I think the books are best read in sequence.I would have given this book 5 stars, except it is in great need of editing for typos. Really deserves 4-1/2 stars as it is, but that isn’t an option.

Could not put this book down till I had finished it! Read the whole series if you can! Look forward to more books from this author!

In these meticulously researched books, the characters quickly come alive to the reader, and soon feel like personal friends. As you read you will share their successes, disappointments, near-death experiences, horror, and satisfactions. They speak in period language, and their values and sense of honor are recognizable in any circumstance. You will truly CARE about them.Not all of the characters are good people. As the series title hints, all manner of horror and atrocity can come from the hands of men. Mr. Griffis doesn't pull any punches in showing the reader the depths of depravity that men are capable of. But the reason for my gushing praise is the author's talent in drawing the reader into the lives of the characters to such an extent that he experiences their emotions, their yearnings, and their despair.If you think the category "historical fiction" sounds dull or slow-paced, you are in for a surprise. You will NOT put down any of these books readily!So why is this, the last book in the series, so darned good that I want to give it an extra few stars? Because through his characters' eyes and thoughts Mr. Griffis presents some truths that are profound, and illustrates them so gently and yet so clearly that more than once I looked away from the page in awe at what I had just read. Then he brings the entire epic saga to a satisfying close, but not an end to the characters' journey through life. You will close the book after reading the last words, satisfied, yet wishing the story could go on.Do yourself a favor: read the whole series, and then send copies as gifts to you closest friends. They'll thank you for it. (Mine have!)
