I bought this book when I was less than 200 pages into The Lies of Locke Lamora. I adored it; the world, the characters, the intricacies of the cons. It was something I didn't know I was looking for until it was in my hands.I'd regard the second book as highly if the story that was built up within the first 200 pages is the story we got. The first chapter was brilliantly written, and spurred me to shirk my adult responsibilities as I was drawn deeper into the narrative. Fans of the first book knew there was plenty of room for raising the stakes, and it seemed as though Red Seas Under Red Skies would deliver on that.Unfortunately the main plot - as well as all the characters I'd grown to care about - were told to bugger off around 300 pages in while Locke and Jean meandered out to sea.I'm torn. I don't hate everything about the middle section of the book, and though I wish the story had gone in another direction (primarily because there were too many plotlines and too many things that weren't followed up on or not given nearly as much development as I'd have liked), I can see why Lynch went in the direction he did.The book's biggest problem is that you could cut around 200 pages of content and wind up with a much stronger product. All the time spent on explaining sailing and nautical terms and this and that was time I'd have rather spent reading about the intricacies of a new con, or delving deeper into Locke's backstory.It didn't help that time skipped about however it wished. There's a particularly bad instance at the beginning of chapter eleven where the narrative jumps forward by several hours following the last chapter, but then the second scene goes right back to the end of the last chapter without warning, and it took me a minute to figure out what was happening. Confusion mixed with long passages about things I don't care about do not make for a pleasant time.I'll say this - Lynch did a marvelous job of describing things I don't care about. He simply couldn't make it interesting in a context where it ground the main plot to a halt.I can't help but get the feeling he felt so much pressure to up the stakes following a first novel where things went to hell in fantastic fashion that he went too far with this one and couldn't keep the plot focused as a result. It's not a bad book by any means, but the best parts largely copy the formula from the first book, and the second act lull is long and dull enough I had to flip back to earlier pages to remind myself what was going on when the plot kicked back into gear.If you haven't read The Lies of Locke Lamora, pick it up. It's well worth your coin. If you enjoy the banter between Locke and Jean, Red Seas Under Red Skies is worth a look. The dialog is as sharp as ever, and despite my overall feelings about the tale, I love the characters more than I did going into it.If you enjoyed Lies more for the con, the consistent pacing, the gradual escalation of the main threat, and the steady build that led to an explosive (and immensely satisfying) conclusion, you'll find some of that here, but it's not going to thrill you half as much as the first book. You could skip from chapter seven to chapter thirteen or fourteen and not miss much of importance.Lynch is a solid writer and world builder. He has a great vision for this series, but for whatever reason things didn't quite gel in this entry. I'm going to read the third book despite seeing several middling reviews because the characters and the world are strong enough to keep me hooked despite the flaws, but I have to admit parts of Red Seas Under Red Skies were slogs nearly on par with the sections of Lord of the Rings where Tolkien was so charmed by a particular arrangement of stones or trees he had to write about them for several pages, or have characters sing for whole chapters. This isn't a book for the casual Locke Lamora/fantasy enthusiast.

Book 2 is just as thrilling as Book 1. One must love Locke and Jean because while they are thieves, they are honorable, good guys who appeal to the heart. They take but give, receive and offer. They fight alongside their friends and take down their enemies. Yet, for all their thievery, they are loyal, nice guys. It's bizarre to say but they are really charming.In Book 2, they voyage from land to sea. Their loss of friends remains heavy on their hearts but they continue on as the notorious, "Gentleman Bastards", true priests of the Crooked Warden, the 13th God. Locke leads the way as the mastermind with Jean at his side.Jean and Locke find themselves in the company of pirates after they are forced to aid a rogue leader. The Bondsmagi are still pissed over their fingerless and tongueless comrade so they continue to plot against Locke and Jean by exposing their identities and whereabouts to men who may come across them. Their watchful eyes puts them on the archon's radar. Again Locke and Jean are taken out of their comfort zone of masterminding cons for financial gain to masterminding cons in order to stay alive. This time, the hustlers get hustled.Brilliantly written! Great story, with two lovely and fierce female protagonists joining the men. The ending is endearing but heartbreakingly sad.I love Locke's compassion, how easily wounded he gets when insulted and Jean's sensitivity to loss and the ease at which he cries. Their friendship is one of a kind and so very admirable. What remains present when reading their story is that both men didn't choose to be thieves, they were made thieves. They don't play honest but they play gentle unless forced into a fight. They are an unforgettable pair much like Holmes and Dr. Watson in that they are entertaining and work well together on the opposite side of the law.

For me, this was a let-down after the first Locke Lamora book. Where the first captured and held my attention from the first moment, this one was slow to gain speed, and, once it did, was so full of complexities and plots within plots and characters within characters that I had a hard time staying with it. Once the main characters get on the ship and develop interesting relationships with the interesting characters there, it speeds up and becomes interesting, but it takes half the book to get there. And then, before it's over with again, the reader is forced to return to the mind-exhausting complexity of plots within plots in order to make sense of the ending.I still give it 4 stars because I love this character and several of the secondary characters, and the good parts were worth wading through the meh parts. However, I will probably not read the third book, as I fear it is likely to be equally or even more complex, and ... I'd rather spend time with characters than plot twists.

The first book was a fun adventure everyone should read. This second book reads like the author had no plan and the editor said, “whatever, we need to release something.”This is a classic problem of an author who wants to widen the world they’ve created, but doen’t know how. Think Robert Jordan or Martin after a few books ... except this is book two.The crux of the issue here is that there isn’t a coherent main arc. The book is a group of scenes where it looks like the author got bored about a third of the way through. The reader could skip the beginning of the book and just start mid way through maybe.The pirates or kind of endearing, but it’s far too long of walk to get there. The character changes aren’t earned and really don’t make sense.I started skimming about 100 pages in and just burnt though the last 100 pages because I was so far in. This book is a skip and it reflects very poorly on the author, editor and publisher after a fantastic first book.

My only complaint was it came to an end much sooner than I wanted. I wanted more. I will be reading all of Mr. Edwards books in the next few months. I just love the simply way he presents which I am able to get such a better understanding from.This should be a must read for all God fearing and loving persons. It is an excellent read for anyone that is beginning to answer to the pull they feel deep within to begin a relationship with their creator. I urge you to answer the pull. You will never regret it.

A Tale of Three Kings looks at the relationships of Saul, David, and Absalom. It is a book that is principally about forgiveness and how it is more important that grudges or revenge. I read this book during a particularly rough time in my life where I felt I had been wronged by someone close to me. This book takes a look at David's actions towards Saul and later towards his son Absalom. Saul and Absalom both attempted to have David killed because they felt that he was a threat to their kingdoms. Edwards does a great job of disarming the reader while informing them of how God views forgiveness. An excellent book that should be read by anyone who has ever been wronged.

This book rocked my world and had me in tears. It will reach into your heart and smack you. I don't think anyone can read it and not be affected by its message. We think we know what being a Christ-follower is about but this book puts it in perspective by the story that the author tells. It's fiction but it's powerful. It was recommended by a friend and I now recommend it to my other friends.

Excellent book for anyone who feels the cards are stacked against them. My Pastor first let me borrow this after custody and court battles, amongst a ton of other opposition as a stepmom. I now recommend to others and always come back to it when things are out of control. Gene Edwards is EXCELLENT in transporting you into where the story takes place. A great " short" read.

This book was recommended by a friend. I was unfamiliar with this book. I can sum it up with "ONE POWERFUL LITTLE BOOK". The author masterfully deals with giving honor where it is due and avoiding becoming like those who abuse their authority and position. A beautiful presentation of Christian love and respect. I got the Kindle version for the Tale of Three Kings, which I think is fantastic for anyone who is serious about living their Christianity and dealing with their hurts and disappointments in a spiritual way. All churches have or will have serious problems arise, and this book helps you to be faithful to God and not be quick to operate like a Saul or an Absalom. I was unaware that I was getting two additional books by Gene Edwards. That was a bonus.

Embry and Holden, not her boyfriend, hook up at an abandoned hotel, accidentally setting it ablaze. They were not alone. Someone videoed their encounter and sends Embry threatening messages. Escalating threats make finding the blackmailer essential, before somebody ends up dead.I haven’t read a thriller recently that left me holding my breath, clenching my fists and shake in a very long time. Most thrillers are more mystery than thrilling. Paula Stokes did such a great job escalating tension from the first blackmail letter to the reveal of the culprit. HIDDEN PIECES never dipped in intensity. The mystery aspect of the story had many plausible suspects, one who was the actual perp.Embry is sympathetic and complex. She cheats on her overseas boyfriend, afraid to break up with him, lies to friends and her mom and makes some stupid, but understandable decisions. Most of all, she doesn’t want to let people down or lose relationships. I adored Holden, who was also no stranger to terrible choices.Family, class, commitment and friendship are at the heart of HIDDEN PIECES. I would have read the book in one sitting, but reluctantly had to go out for a bit. HIDDEN PIECES is a slow burn that will keep you guessing until the very end. My heart is still thumping.

I really liked this. I wasn't a huge fan of the main character but I loved the setting and the story. An event (or events, depending on how you look at it) sets off a chain of blackmail texts to our main character. She is tasked with certain things, most of them containing a certain level of danger involved with threats to people she loves.We spend much of the novel trying to figure out who the blackmailer is and what their reasons are. This is where thrillers often let me down because one of two things happen: the reveal of the perp is way too predicable OR the author takes a last ditch effort and just throws something random in that does not connect to the story. NEITHER of these are the case with Hidden Pieces and I am so glad. There were a few suspicious characters with various possible motives, so it wasn't entirely predicable. And the author pulled a conclusion from her story. I've had good luck with Paula Stokes and can't wait to see her next offering!

This was such a good YA thriller and mystery. I don’t find too many well written and thought out thrillers in YA and this one was both of those things. The characters were relatable and well fleshed out. They felt like teens which sometimes when I read YA the characters don’t come across as actual teens even if that’s what the author is intending, but Paula made me believe I was reading about teens with what they did and said. It all felt very authentic to the teenage experience. I loved the setting and descriptions of the area because it really connected me to the story and made me visualize it as I was reading. I did suspect who did the blackmailing but through the course of the book I began to doubt myself and even though who I thought did it did do it, how it was revealed and the why were surprises for me. I loved the book and highly recommend it!

Embry is not a good person. After deciding to put her relationship with her boyfriend Luke on hold, she decided to hook up with Holden. But there’s a problem: Holden was dating Embry’s best friend Julia at the time. While Holden did break up with her, Embry still hasn’t admitted to Julia that she was the person that Holden hooked up with–nor has she stopped.After Embry’s and Holden’s misadventure results in setting the Sea Cliff Inn on fire by accident, she suddenly finds herself thrust into small town fame after she ran back into the hotel to save a homeless man. No one knows that she’s responsible for the fire.Until the letter comes demanding that she either admit to everything that happened on Facebook or the person will ruin the life of someone that she cares about.Embry chooses the second option. And what ensues is a dangerous game of lies and putting those she loves into danger to keep the secret hidden.This was an excellent YA thriller. I’ve heard some other people complain that it was obvious to them who was behind the letter and messages, but honestly, I had no idea until the very end. And even if so, I still think there’s fun within the journey anyway.Additionally, I thought that this had a very realistic portrayal of poverty. For example, Embry’s family (just her mom) could only afford to live in that town because the mortgage had been significantly paid off when they inherited the house. They struggle to pay bills. There’s a tension that comes from knowing that her friend Julia can simply buy what she wants while Embry cannot. At one point, Embry does not want to go the hospital when she should because it would be just another bill that her family would be in debt for. There’s not a lot of YA books that feature characters like this, and I think this may be the actual first one that I remember that specifically mentions that a character gets free breakfast and lunch at school.Definitely a worthwhile read.

This book is a crock of bull. This poor girl is so sadly misinformed, and is spewing unscientific lies about a species she clearly misunderstands on every single level. Clearly she hasn't caught on to the fact the only reason she is trying to advocate for captivity is her own childlike selfish obsession with an intelligent wild animal that has no business being in a tiny pool after being ripped from it's family. It's sad anyone would pay her for this. HumanKIND needs to step it up and educate lost souls like this petulant little brat.

Frankly, I purchased this book because I thought an ebook version of Rick Steves guide was not available (I was mistaken). I am now in Switzerland trying to use the guide. I find it hard to navigate (might be true of all ebook travel guides) but of more concern to me is the lack of practical information. For example, in Zermatt there are three ways to get to a "Matterhorn view". The Fodor's mentioned them but provides no details - how much does it cost? where is the station? how long is the trip? and the guide only suggests a couple of restaurants, one of which is closed for remodeling until Dec 2015. As far as what do you do in this town when the weather is bad and the mountain isn't out, they are silent on that subject. Unless of course you want to go sit in a bar and drink.And I don't think the guide adequately addresses things like train ticket options -- such as the purchase of a Swiss rail pass which can be a very good choice for many tourists.There is always a possibility that some of the information I was seeking is somewhere in this guide and I couldn't find it, but I don't think so.I also purchased the Fodor's guide to England for this trip and had similar experience with it. Superficial at best and lacking in the practical details so important when you are traveling on your own.

I mainly bought Fodor's Switzerland travel guide for the section on Geneva. The Rick Steves' Switzerland travel guide is excellent and has better coverage on using Switzerland's excellent rail system, but Rick Steves doesn't have any information on Geneva.The Fodor's travel guide does not have an index, which I found very annoying. It also has limited information about the Swiss rail system, and it seems to be geared toward more expensive hotels, restaurants, etc. than the Rick Steves guide.

I start with Rick Steves for most trips, but turn to Fodor’s for an alternative POV and details on areas Rick does not cover.

Fodors does an amazing job of giving great previews of European cities by including full color pictures of major highlights, off the beaten path attractions. However, one thing that is missing is a strong conviction in their recommendations. We did not use their restaurant or hotel recommendations as there were many other credible sources online for this, e.g. TripAdvisor, Rick Steves' forums, etc. But their suggestions on the major highlights are very appropriate for a first time visitor or someone looking to dig deeper into a specific region. However, unlike other sources, e.g. Rick Steves or Frommers' this guide lacks practical suggestions on how to save money or time with practical tips, e.g. how to buy tickets in advance or how to save waiting time, etc. So, that part leaves a first time visitor in the lurch. This void however, was best filled by local hoteliers or tourist offices who are more than helpful atleast in the case of Switzerland, where the breathtaking My Switzerland guides from the embassy were an awesome reference!All in all, an adequate companion for a first time visitor. However, those who are looking for an in-depth guidance on hiking trails or specific guidance on buses or trains will find it lacking.

Nothing like old fashioned INDIVIDUAL country maps. There are more smaller cities on these maps & easier to read than a bulky book or trying to get a good GPS signal through a tunnel in the Alps

Good info. Nice photos. Good recommendations. We have used Fodor's to help us in Europe in the past. The most complete books that we have found. They could add a few more lodging options, but I suppose that's why we have the Internet.

Rick Steves does not cover everything in Switzerland so Fodor’s is a good companion book if you are branching out from Stevesland.

There is so much valuable info in this book. I read a little each day while preparing for my trip. I’m taking it with me as I travel to make sure I’ll get to see as many highlights as I can

Arnold M. Washton, PhD, is an addiction psychologist in private practice in New York City (Recovery Options) and Princeton, New Jersey (The Washton Group). A specialist in the treatment of substance use and other behavioral health problems since 1975, Dr. Washton has served on the faculty in Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine and on the voluntary staff of the University Medical Center at Princeton. He was the founding president of the Division on Addictions of the New York State Psychological Association and has served on advisory boards for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and special committees of the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the American Psychological Association. Dr. Washton's clinical work, teaching activities, and publications have often focused on integrating the principles and practices of client-centered psychotherapy into the treatment of addictions.Joan E. Zweben, PhD, is a clinical psychologist with over 35 years of experience in treating addiction and in training treatment practitioners. These practitioners include peer counselors, social workers, marriage and family counselors, psychologists, criminal justice personnel, nurses, and physicians. She has a broad-based background in treatment of both alcoholism and drug dependence and has experience with both residential and outpatient modalities. She has served on numerous work groups focused on policy issues. As a therapist without a lot of coursework in addiction, I found this book extremely helpful in making balanced suggestions for treatment. The authors are non-dogmatic and embrace harm reduction as well as abstinence approaches, and they offer an overall guide for treatment from initial assessment through termination. Very clearly written, with good information. I learned a lot from this book, and I have recommended it to many of my colleagues.

I couldn't praise this book enough! I'm a supervising counselor among substance abusing population and this boom has excellent suggestions and practical information. I've already recommend this book to numerous colleagues!

I'm a guy who was one of the early-birds in the late 90's, hand coding my own html pages and creating a personal website. Then rode the wave of Dreamweaver, and Flash, and Actionscript, and now find myself behind the times with all the new tools and methodologies. So I thought I'd give this book a try, seeing as I have my own domain, and a embarrassingly bad website right now. What I was really hoping from this book was some "recipes" to assemble together useful websites using popular tools, to do things like blog, host videos, connect with social media, and do some simple e-commerce.As such, I'm pretty disappointed with this book. Really, at the end of the day, what this book does for you is talk quite a bit about hand-coding html and css, and then glosses over really quickly a lot of other topics like html editors, social media, advertising, blogging, and interactive websites, paypal, and a few other things. But it really doesn't tie any of these things together, nor in most cases does it even give you enough info to actually utilize these technologies (aside from the html and css that is). The book is neither a good reference, nor a good tutorial for actually building a useful website. I guess if I were naming the book truthfully, it would be called something like "Introduction To Websites" or "Websites 101", or "Websites, a 20,000 ft view". So I dunno, I'm not actually sure who this book would be useful for to be honest. It's kind of funny, because the author included a "Who Shouldn't Read This Book" paragraph, hidden away inside the book, and after reading the list of people who *shouldn't* read the book, that seems like just about everybody to me. Perhaps he should have given a little more thought to who actually *would* benefit from this book, rather than who wouldn't.

I ordered and received this book, in about four days. I and my daughter want to create our own websites and sell our products. We have a lot to learn at this time, as I have not created a web page since I used Microsoft Publisher in years past. This book is about 600 pages, counting the index in the back which is helpful and includes HTML Semantic Elements & Character Entities in the Appendix. The 4 parts of the book and from creating a webpage in Part 1, the chapters flow from a basic introduction and then the HTML language is inserted so you can create that first page on your computer, that will be the beginning of your website and included therein. There is a lot to start learning, but if that 20 year old with all the facial hair and tattoos can learn it, so can I. Good luck to me and if I find this book as helpful as it seems with my first reading, I will come back and give it another star. I like it so far and have learned a lot in my beginnings of developing my own website.

I have been designing web sites for four years and I have collected over a dozen books on website design. Only one other comes close to being this clear and comprehensive as an introductory manual. It is much improved over the 2011 version too.It covers the entire process of website design, selecting a development tool, finding a provider, an introduction to html programming, and finally, dealing with AJAX and JavaScript interaction with the website.There is a goodly amount of material concerning the details of successfully completing each step in the process. I learned several things that I hadn't seen in reading website design books for four years. Even at this late date it has made me a better website programmer and I recommend it for all beginning website designers.

You are quite likely to get more than you bargained for in this book, and for once, that's a good thing.We all know Web sites, or think we do. I picked up this book just looking for enough HTML and CSS to let me build a basic Web site, which it did. But it also places the site you're building in the much more global context of the Internet, covering not just coding but buying your own domain names and selecting hosting vendors; interacting with search engines and publicizing your site; where to get free site analytics and track how it is being followed; how your site fits in (or not) with blogs and Facebook, and how to work with active content and media.Yes, you know these things or at least know their names; so did I. But I haven't found a book that even attempts to pull all the topics into one volume you could lift without getting a hernia. So if you're proud that you're Web savvy...buy the book anyway and just hide it when company comes over.Quibbles: Each of the topics covered deserves a book of its own, and there are multiple out there for any given topic; so "Creating a Web Site" is the survey course...you'll want to deep dive with a more detailed book on the topics that interest you. As a corollary, if you're already a certified code jockey, this isn't your book and you know that already. (But while developing the code, you may not be thinking about marketing and monetizing the site, and this book can help you there.) And there are point, particularly in describing blogging and site analytics, where the author ties his discussion very closely to Google and that company's offerings. He does try to be vendor-independent in other chapters, however, and in fairness, the Google services he describes are free (my favorite price) and the discussion gives you an idea why Google is such a big player, beyond just its search engine offering.Hidden gem: The author mentions a Microsoft product, Expression Web, as an alternative to Dreamweaver for building Web sites. When he wrote the book, Expressions Web was a product you had to buy. Subsequently, Microsoft has made it a free download. It's unclear how long they will continue to support this free product, so my strong advice is to head over to Microsoft's web site, search on "Expression Web 4" and download it while it's still free. That alone will save you a few hundred bucks and makes the book pay for itself.Great book, even if you know the Web. And oh, yeah...I even got my Web site built using this volume alone. Highly recommended.

If I could take some of Sam's courage & get up & do things I would be happy.

Great true story,amazing couple, shows how adversity brings out the best in some people. Folks who moan and groan about how life isn't fair should have a read of this to get things in perspective. I did see Sam's Australian Story on television, so definitely wanted to read about him and Jenny. One gets no negative vibes whatsoever when reading about Sam's lows, which are far outweighed by his attitude, which leads him to experience highs others will only dream about.

After hearing Sam & Jenny speak at a work function I was keen to hear more about his/ their story. This book is great, an inspiring read...
