I chose this book as my free First Reads for May because the other selections were less appealing, but I didn't have great hopes for it. This was an ok, if totally implausible, story. I appreciate how the author wove some historical facts in with the fiction. However, the abrupt ending was completely unsatisfying and left more loose ends than it answered. It leaves the reader to ask "Is that it?" I'm afraid I ended up feeling sorry I wasted my time on this.
I’m giving this one star not because it is a bad story. In fact it is an excellent story and I enjoyed every moment of reading. I am giving it one star because the end is totally unfair to the reader. I understand authors wanting leaders to go into the next book, but not like this. It angers me as a reader, to be so shamelessly taken in, to go to the next book. That’s just wrong.
Book ends with a cliffhanger, this is simply bait so that you will buy his next book in the series. Total contempt for his reader. I won't make the mistake of reading this author again.
This is one of the best thrillers that I’ve read in a while! Even though it’s a long book, there are several exciting and fast-paced cat and mouse chase scenes during the second half of the story. The first half is filled with a different kind of thriller. Think Alfred Hitchcock, utilizing anticipation and suspense to thrill the audience as much as the action scenes did. The characters in this story might not initially be running around, but there is such a wonderfully tense and foreboding environment, that you’ll break a sweat just knowing that something big will eventually happen. My biggest consideration for liking a book is based on whether or not I am fascinated by the characters. Even though I can’t relate to them, I love the main characters, and even several of the minor ones as well. The story follows many different points of view, including the antagonists Eddie and Skyler. Eddie is a resident at Harmony House, which is a facility that cares for gifted individuals. Eddie has Asperger’s, which is a high functioning form of autism. He is insanely brilliant, with an IQ just shy of 200, however he does not understand common social communication, and struggles to maintain tranquility if he does not have a structured routine. Skyler is his newly acquired doctor, who expresses pure compassion and dedication to helping Eddie achieve what he wants, which is to be able to hear his mother sing. I loved the interactions between these two, because you can feel how real their friendship is. Eddie has invented a device that can pull sounds that have been spoken or played in any room from almost any specific point in time. Naturally, there several other people who want this technology. I have to say, I actually liked several of the antagonists (there are quite a few) and how they quarreled amongst each other. Some things to consider (I don’t think they’re spoilers, but things I like to ask before reading): There’s some fowl language, no sexually graphic scenes, but brief mention of them, no harm comes to any animals (that might not seem important, but I tend to get nervous when animals are mentioned and I briefly wonder if they’ll be ok). Also, there is a cliffhanger. Luckily, this book has an ending that ties a lot of things together, but I was definitely left in bewilderment.I cannot wait for the next book! I highly recommend this one!!
What a great read. Very exciting and cannot wait until the next one! I was surprised that this was a first novel, until I saw the writer's biography and saw he was a successful screenwriter. You are totally drawn into the world of these characters as Mr. Bernt creates the environments so beautifully vivid. And the characters are unique and uniquely human in their idiosyncrasies. Unfortunately, it is such an amazing read, I could not stop. By only complaint is that I have to wait a year for the next one. If the publisher is reading this, please tell Mr. Bernt to write faster!
The echo box, Eddie, and Skylar's drive to help Eddie achieve his goal is truly a great premise. The omniscient writing style didn't allow me to really get immersed in the story. The abrupt ending had me searching to make sure I hadn't somehow skipped a couple of pages; it was a non-ending. It's a great story idea, but, for me, ultimately missed the mark.
Love the craftsmanship and sheer genius of this author. And the depth of character he poured into Eddie was a thing of beauty. That being said, may we have a heart-to-heart about the ending, Mr. Bernt? We're rocking along at the speed of (dare it be said) sound and suddenly BAM!! We fall flat on our collective tushes, having run headlong into a massive concrete wall hidden between the pages. You call it the ending. We call it a wait-am-I-missing-a-page-or-something scramble that flung us straight back into the real world with a very harsh landing. We adore you and Eddie. At least give us an air bag next time, okay?
Interesting book until the end, when the author simply stopped and said"Get the next book if you want to know how it all ends." I will never get another book from this ethically challenged author.
