This is such an awesome way to engage kids to link writing and STEAM. There is a real disconnect in schools between learning to write technically or creatively and using those skills for what they are meant for. The lessons are perfect for small groups, after-school clubs, homeschooling or just fun supplemental activities for the classroom or home.
Absolutely top notch! There are 12 "units," all of which involve more than one lesson, and some of which are two weeks in length (for my 45 min 6th grade science class periods). The lessons are indeed enthralling AND effective, as the book claims. Usually when I get a resource like this, I get a couple good ideas, which I then have to modify to some extent. Everything in here is very high quality and super engaging. The book contains complete, excellent instructions and lists of supplies, as well as tried and true ways to use the lessons effectively. All of these lessons were tried in the classroom or in workshops with kids to make sure they are classroom ready and that kids love them and learn from them. Handouts are provided in the book to be copied, but links to the 826 website's resources for this book are also provided with these and many more resources for each lesson. The way the writing is integrated into the lessons is so good the students won't realize how much writing they are doing, or how much they are learning. Here is an outline of Chapter 10 as an example:Ch 10: The Science of SuperpowersIncluded in the heading it says: 4 sessions, 2 hours each (about 2 weeks for my students) Stem Disciplines: physical science, life science, engineering Writing Activities: technical writing, narrative writing, poetrySession 1: I Am From...(Origin Poems and DNA)--discusses how every superhero has an origin story: "Where did she come from? How did he get his superpower? Like Superman, does she have a secret weakness? The ultimate origin story for every living thing is written in its genetic code, or DNA. But DNA isn't the end of the story. How living things develop depends not only on their genetic code but also on their environment. In this session, students explore the heritable qualities of living things...Students look at the interplay between that inheritance and who a person becomes, sometimes discusses as nature vs. nurture."--Introduction: whole class discussion with thoughtful prompts: "The first session focuses on origins and what makes us (and heroes) who we are. Your students will reflect on and explore the dimensions of their identity, from the parts they control to the parts they don't."--Activity: What is DNA? Discussion and ActivityExtraction of DNA from strawberries--Origin Stories "Brainstorm Breakout--Have students use the "Supercookbook" handout (they have learned about DNA using a cookbook analogy) to begin developing a description of their hero." "Personifying Your Hero"-- students write a persona poem from the perspective of their hero (examples are given.)--WrapupSession 2: Up, Up, and Away! Secret Power Poems and Flight)--Introduction: students begin an investigation into how things might be able to fly. They aren't told the answer. Indepth instructions about discussion and what to have students look at/discuss. Highlights the concepts of structure and function. Then: "Today's function: flight! The ability to get off the ground has been pursued by heroes and humans since ancient times. Most of the time, they have failed...But some heroes overcome gravity and genetics to become airborne. Sometimes superpowers let them, and sometimes their supergear does.--Engineering FlightStudents are given a mission (engineer a vehicle for their hero to fly in) Students use "Paper Airplane Tech Specs", paper airplane templates (optional but helpful for younger students--they can still modify and design) and rulers, and they then design and test their planes. After at least three trials, students calculate average flight length, duration, and speed. They work in pairs at testing stations. They learn about isolating variables, and then go on to design a better plane.--Understanding Flight: great discussion, mini-activities, etc to help students come to an understanding of thrust and lift.--If I Could Fly...students write a poem whose stanzas each describe an obstacle and how it's overcome--engineering is perseverance and thinking ahead to possible problems--Flying Out the Door: wrap up discussionSession 3: Quick, to Safety! Secret Lair Building and Haikus--discusses what shelter is and how humans and heroes engineer them to meet all kinds of different requirements and needs--Preparation: details what needs to be prepped and exactly what needs to be done--Introduction: "Today, students will continue engineering to fill an important need of every hero: a secret lair. When they're done they'll engineer a haiku that mirrors the secret lair's structure." Great discussion/mini-activities to go with this--what are the elements that make up a hero's secret lair and why.--Engineering a LairStudents are given the "Secret Lair Blueprint" handout and then start to design. After a few minutes, you introduce a challenge--there are three you can choose from that limit the size, materials, etc. When designs are sketched then checked, they build their construct from rubber-cement prepped cotton swabs. When done, students are debriefed with great discussion prompts provided.--Lair-Upon-Lair Haikustudents discuss similarities between engineering and writing, and explore the client-engineer relationship, as well as structure and form in their writing by writing haikus. Examples are given, as well as modifications for more structure to help younger students if necessary. An optional additional writing prompt is given for students who want more.--Safe for Now...students share their haikus and have a wrap up discussionSession 4: Saving the Day--Prose Poems and the Great Egg Drop "In this session, students will explore principles of physics while designing safety systems for a supervehicle that will get the hero to the scene without a scratch."--Preparation: detailed explanation of what to do--Introduction: great discussion of how you don't need superpowers to be a hero--to help someone in distress. All students go around and tell a short story about a time when they chose to be a hero (examples and prompts are given) Today they get to be a hero again and engineer something safe for their hero The students collectively create a T-chart about safety structures and function.--Designing an Escape: lots of good info here on engineering process, prototypes, and so on. I feel like I'm typing a book, but this is really just a very simple outline--each session has a ton of background knowledge, discussions, examples, and on and on. Students use "Saving the Egg" handout (their egg is their crash test dummy) and start drawing a design plan, they then get it approved and get their supplies and start building. Then you do the egg drop, students discuss, students' ideas are collected on the board, and they collaboratively draw a revised supervehicle--Writing a Prose Poem: students write a prose poem about their hero's most colossal challenge. Great prompts are given.--Teach-Backs and Close.
