An amazing read, written well in a short essay format. This book of short little known New Jersey history kept me turning the pages. It spans from where NJ was young with Revolutionary War history, through to the Civil War, right to the 1950s. As a history buff, while I heard some of these stories, I never knew some of the other details included, but there was more in this book that made me say: "I never knew that," and I figured myself to be someone up on NJ history.A great book also for young adults or those not to heavy into history as the book gives a flavor to most events not taught in history books yet keeps your attentions with the heros & villians which make up New Jersey. The photos certainly compliment the book. The only draw back, I wish there were more stories to read! Hopefully a second volume will come along soon.I recommend this book to everyone, it was a very enjoyable easy read.

The authors have done a fine job. Each story seems to be just long enough to convey all the pertinent information as well as the little nuances that make it interesting without dragging on. I always enjoy a book comprised of short stories because it seems less daunting than a large book in an era when so much of our leisure reading time has to be shared with other activities. Having lived in New Jersey all my life and growing up with a love of history, I can personally identify with a large number of the stories.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter titled, "Newark's Ernie Pyle," which is about my maternal grandfather Warren H. Kennet who was known as Harry. He was a war correspondent for the Newark Evening News during World War II. He and my grandmother Florence Vohden Kennet raised their 3 daughters Marjorie, Patricia and Nancy (my mom) in Union. He was the first war correspondent to land on Normandy Beach on D-day. In June 1969, he wrote a 25th Anniversary Commemorative article for the Newark News titled "It Seems Like Yesterday."

I have to disagree with the other posts from the above readers. I received this book to review for a class I am teaching on New Jersey History and I have to say for the most part, there is a reason this is "forgotten history". The stories are weak and most are not worth mentioning. Stories of corruption in politics are hardly surprising and obscure National Guard units who were all finely prepared for wars that they never fought in are hardly history. The book read like stereo instructions and the only saving grace was that it was short. The stories seemed to be little more than paraphrased research from other people and aside from the the fact that the book mentions The Pine Barrens by John McPhee it does little to explain anything about the pines. (Read McPhee's book, it's terrific) I strongly suggest looking elsewhere for New Jersey history, since there is little in this book, unless you consider no name baseball players, city mayors and blurbs on racism history.

As a life-long resident of New Jersey, this book was for me a learning experience. The Hidden History of New Jersey is a must-read--and not just for those who reside in the Garden State. The important events and heroism of Jerseymen in the Revolutionary and Civil War is thoroughly researched and well written--an important addition to the library of a History buff. Also stories of infamous politicians and the Boardwalk life of the Jersey Shore come to life in this book. For sure, educators will find the Hidden History of New Jersey very useful in the classroom.
