The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was founded in 1786 and is the largest daily newspaper in Pittsburgh. Steve Ziants is the Sunday sports editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Steve Ziants has done a nice job of capturing 100 snippets of Pirates history. Sometimes the topic is a single game, or a player, or a play. The prose is solid, which is a good thing as many of these topics have been covered in greater depth many times over. What else is left to say about Roberto Clemente that has not already been said? Yet, Ziants does a nice job of summarizing in the time allotted.Not all the topics are as well worn as Clemente, Stargell and Maz. For example, Ziants recounts a triple header played in the waning days of the 1920 season. He also devotes time to Vince Lascheid (long time organist at Three Rivers) and Reggie Howze (the saxophonist on the Clemente Bridge). There's enough minutiae in here to keep even the deepest fan engaged.The book runs 268 pages of text. So, roughly 2.6 pages per 'chapter', which makes it easy to digest in small chunks when you don't have a lot of time to sit down to read. There is no index, but there is a full end notes section with Ziants listing his sources (primarily newspapers).Recommended for Pirates fans.
