This book gave a history of Brierfield (Jefferson Davis Plantation) and Hurricane Plantation (Joseph Davis Plantation) south of Vicksburg, MS located on Davis Bend next to the Mississippi River. The book shows the Davis family fighting the Mississippi River Floods and losing more than than winning. The book gave us a peek at Jefferson, Joseph and Varina (Jefferson's second wife). Varina had to have everything her way and this brought her into conflict with Joseph. This is something that I had suspected from other historical documents but this book nailed it down. Brierfield was named by Jefferson Davis's first wife, Knox, and had nothing to do with Varina's girlhood home in Natchez, The Briars. So that was cleared up and I am grateful.Frank Edgar Everett, Jr., the author, was an attorney in Jackson, Ms (now deceased) and I am so glad he took the time from his busy schedule as an attorney to write this book.
