About the Author

Taylor Bruce founded the Wildsam series of American field guides in 2012. His guides incorporate personal essays, local interviews, illustrated maps, and archival anecdotes to capture the living history of some of America’s favorite cities including San Francisco, New Orleans, Charleston and Detroit. Selected by National Geographic as a part of the prestigious “Traveler 50” list in 2014, the series will expand in summer 2016 to include guides to great American road trips. Previous to starting Wildsam, Taylor’s writing appeared in Men’s Journal, Paste, and Oxford American, among others.

For America’s most mysterious city, you may need two tour guides, this Wildsam Field Guide to New Orleans, for sure, and perhaps a conventional one. The Wildsam guide will get you into the pores of the city. Thanks to Wildsam, we visited the Backstreet Cultural Museum, the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, and Congo Square yesterday. At the Backstreet, we got a leaflet for a Second Line march by the Women of Class in Tremé today, and enjoyed it very much. This little book of 133 pages really packs it in, including interviews, essays, news articles, history, maps (mostly conceptual), cuisine, music, and more. It includes Hurricane Katrina, and the Saints and the Aints. Very, very rich. Such a book is possible only with very tight and skillful editing. The stars here appear to be Nathalie Jordi (New Orleans city editor) and Taylor Bruce (editor in chief, Wildsam Field Guides). The editors have chosen to emphasize features and background not so well covered in other guides, while giving little space to some important features that other guides cover. The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Louis and the statue of Jeanne d’Arc are non-existent in this guide, which is going too far.The guide often refers to other interesting publications. Sometimes you get just a name of an annual event or an institution, which can easily be followed up on the Internet. While the editors were busy shoe-horning so much great stuff into one little book, they missed a few compositional features. This is a book that has no title page. What? Amazing! Meanwhile, after the last numbered page, there are several blank pages of unattractive graph paper (perhaps for writing notes), so there was no shortage of pages for a title page. Another compositional flaw is the use of mouse type for subheads in certain sections (e.g., Live Music, Cuisine) that are also printed in hard-to-read orange. Tiny type, in orange! Page numbers given in the Index entries, although slightly larger, are also in this orange. This is good for people under 40 with 20-20 vision. The Acknowledgments appear on page 2, but without any heading at all. This feature is written in the first-person plural “we,” but is not signed. Who are “we”? It is printed in 4 or 5 point type, but there is room on the page for a larger type-size. The “Welcome” feature on page 5 is signed by “TB,” but you will have to search the book to discover that the needlessly modest TB is Taylor Bruce. It’s a good book. He should be proud.Typos are rare and insignificant, except for Fi Yi Yi mispelled as Fi Ya Ya on page 28; it is spelled correctly on page 86.Enjoy this great book!

My friend suggested picking this up before our trip and it was great. Led us to some wonderful places to eat that even our tried and true Louisiana friends had never experienced.

Recently moved to New Orleans. Was looking for a guide that included elements other than just tourist attractions (neighborhoods, history, etc.) This book more than met my expectations. A few New Orleans nativos vouched that the book and recommendations are accurate.

Personal reviews of areas of New Orleans. Not a guide for tourism.

I've given this book as a gift to friends from or traveling to New Orleans at least a half dozen times. Can't recommend it enough. I fell in love with that city all over again when I brought this field guide with me!

Absolutely loved the New Orleans guide. As a long time visitor, I still came away with excitement and new things to add to my "must see/eat/do" list for future travels. The illustrations truly give the words life, and the overall aesthetic is one of integrity and curiosity. Highly recommended for those who enjoy traveling with intent, first at home through imagination and later in person in New Orleans itself.

This is a small book that packs a huge punch when traveling. Background on the neighborhoods, insight into the history of the city, as well as tips on some lesser known destinations. Highly recommended.

Just got this guide and it's making me itch for a weekend in NOLA. Can't wait - reading all the rad stories while planning my trip. Highly recommend this hand-drawn guide of illustration and favorites not to miss.
