You know, I try to keep my finger on the pulse that is my kids' likes, interests, and passions. When something new crops up, I try to be supportive. For my 10 year old daughter, who is very fond of science, specifically anything related to zoology, I got this book because she has recently surprised me by developed a strong interest in Astronomy. She says this is definitely a 5 star book, specifically because she really enjoys seeing the pictures of the things discussed. She has read one other more sizeable Astronomy book, Astronomy for Dummies, but that didn't have pictures. So while she found the information useful, she wasn't as enthusiastic about it as this one. Although, I think I have the Astronomy for Dummies book to thank for developing her interest in that subject, it was one of several books I got for her to read just for the heck of it. She was so excited about this one her whole face lit up when I gave it to her. She likes her Science Encyclopedia better, but says this is still definitely a 5 star book and that she loves it.

Really love all the pictures but I wish there were less illustrated pictures and more captured photos. I like that there is a lot more than just planets and comets included but there is a lot of theory too - futuristic illustrations of potential events or landing on some far away planets or moons. Although stimulating to the imagination, I would have preferred that this book remained a factual encyclopedia. I think that if I saw this at Barnes and Noble, I probably would not have bought it.

I bought this for my 10 year old nephew for Christmas. He was wanting some science kits and stuff this year and he has been really into certain areas of astronomy after watching The Martian and he keeps asking me to look at my astronomy books which are too technical for him, but I found this online. He was very happy with the gift and while a some of the information is still a bit beyond him, he's been having fun looking at the pictures and reading bits and pieces of the data about the different planets and such.

Wonderful book. Lucious pictures and interesting facts at any age! I gifted two of my grandsons who are fascinated with all things space a book apiece. They dove right into their new books and refer to them a lot. I feel good giving them quality books they can appreciate and enjoy for a long time to come.

I got this for my 9 year old grandson as a Christmas present and he loved it but so did his 7 year old brother. It features a planet per page and really gives pertinent facts. The pictures are beautiful and I would recommend this to any parent or grandparent who has a child interested in space. I coupled this with The Night Sky book and it made a dynamic present.

Received today .. fast shipping, new clean book. First impression is great and happy with the purchase.But, there are many tiny fonts on black background, which isn't easy to read for young children, especially who are English isn't their first language.

Bought this for a family friend - a nine year old boy with ADHD, who loves everything about space and wants to be an astronaut. He’s a friend of my son so I took my boy’s advice on getting this book and he was right. The birthday boy loves it! His mom said she couldn’t believe that in the middle of opening presents he got totally into the book and stopped everything else. Wow! Now I need to order one for my kid!

Wow, my grandpa loves this book! It has a lot of great pictures and information. I highly recommend this book.

Many years ago, I saw the first part of the Mahabharata by Peter Brook at Avignon. And I have always been sorry not to have seen Parts 2 and 3. I am not young, I am 73. Later, several times, I saw parts of the Mahabharata, in theaters (most recently at Theatre du Soleil). I had forgotten things and I was missing a global picture. Reading the whole Mahabharata would be a major enterprise. This wonderful book by Samhita Arni, written at an amazingly young age, is a great pleasure to read and I suppose that it gives a reasonable introduction to the Mahabharata.

I like the writing style - very solemn and child-like, and I think the essence of the stories is well-presented. The illustrations are great, and the "family tree" in the beginning is invaluable for keeping track of the many characters and their relations. I can't wait to get the second volume.

I discovered this book at a hotel in Pondicherry, another great project by Tara Publishing in Chennai. Besides being published on great paper composed of I-do-not-know-what-material (delightful to touch, and view, this is a great story. My congratulations to this young writer. For my western mind, even though this was a child's view, it helped me understand the great epic. I highly recommend.

This is a good book. I actually went to Mr. Zulawski's classes a couple of times. He is a great guy and shows how well this method can work. However, if you are not someone who needs it as a means for work it is only enough to make you dangerous. I went through the classes, I own the book but I was also in law enforcement and a detective for many years. You need to fine tune your skills each and every interview or interrogation including when using the Polygraph system or the CVSA you need to have many, many skills under your belt for these examples even using those machines as well as they can be used. Don't waste your time or money unless you are an officer and can get the continued training you really need to be effective. I was also trained in what is called the READ method so I combine the knowledge and used what works best for me.

Pretty good book. My kids won't be getting away with anything now. I'll show them. The book was listed as like new and it is for the most part. It has some writing in it, fortunately not too bad, and it looks like a kid with a crayon attacked one of the pages. Other than that it's in great condition. Now I just need to find out who wrote in it and interview and interrogate them, using practical aspects of course.

I must admit I bought this book with certain insecurity. The price tag is a bit high for a "shot in the dark".After reading it, I am very glad I bought it. It is packed with great advice on the psychology of lying. By demonstrating how the mind of the lier works, and how the interviewer must use that knowledge to his advantage, the book greatly improved my skills, in a practical way. I believe I will use much of this knowledge in my work. I don't recommend buying the kindle version if you intend to read it on your PC, because it is a lengthy book, which you will probably want to annotate a lot. Advantages of the computer apart, I prefer to annotate physical books.

This book is a stellar discussion of the psychological world of addiction. It discusses the "private logic" of addicts, the type of daily rationalizations that form what Nakken called "addictive reasoning." These rationalizations make sense when you understand the short term goals and myopic mindset found in the world of the addict, but if you try to understand the addict using a general, "common sense" approach you'll find yourself getting frustrated.The real beauty of "addictive reasoning" is that it's broad enough to cover a lot of other types of behaviors that can loosely be called addictions, even if they aren't addictions in the strictest, most physical sense of the word. It can be applied to shopaholics, binge eaters, people who get addicted to certain types of lovers or with being in love in general, and others. A narcissist, for example, can be seen as someone who is addicted to validation and superficial forms of approval. By considering a narcissist as a validation addict and then applying Nakken's book on addictive thinking to such people, it can shed a lot of light on why they act the way they do and what types of people put up with them. This is all to say that the uses of this book extend beyond alcohol, drugs or whatever else typically first comes to mind when people hear the word "addict."I would highly recommend supplementing this book with readings from Alfred Adler (especially his writing on social interest), Karen Horney, Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth and buddhist literature in general, as I found a lot of overlap with those books and the concepts Nakken describes.

This book represents a different side of addiction that often is not talked about. Many books you pick up on the subject deal with the genetic and brain chemistry of the disease which answers some questions but not all. You still wonder in the back of your mind, but where is the person I use to know. Why don't they want help? How could they go from Point A to Point B so quickly? How could they change so dramatically? I took so much away from this book and stopped taking it personally. I knew I was talking to the addict and not the person I use to know. I also took away from it how they don't develop emotionally and intellectually as someone who doesn't use drugs and why the relationship that forms between the drug and the addict becomes so important. It was a life changer for me in how I dealt with the addict. I finally got it. I would suggest this book to anyone who is dealing with an addict. Even the ones who don't like to read. It's not a long book yet it packs a powerful punch in the world of addiction.

I think most people use the term, "addictive personality," too loosely. It's often used to describe someone who is very passionate and involved, maybe obsessed, with an activity or hobby. Some people can become overly enthusiastic about almost anything and become completely consumed by it. The term is also used to describe the intense drive and focus that most high-achieving people seem to possess. This single-minded pursuit of perfection is what motivates a violinist to practice scales for ten hours a day or a basketball player to shoot free-throws for just as long. I read somewhere that the mastery of some skills cannot be acquired in less than 10,000 hours practice, regardless of talent. While that may certainly be an addiction, in a sense, it's not what Craig Nakken is talking about in his book, "The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior". Nakken says that an addictive personality is created by the illness of addiction and represents a change resulting from the addictive process that takes place within a person. It didn't exist before, and it's not a predisposition to addiction. In other words, what he is saying is that addiction is so powerful that it actually permanently alters one's personality. The addict, if he recovers, will have three distinct personalities throughout his life: before addiction, in active addiction, and in recovery. And according to AA co-founder, Bill Wilson, "...no true alky ever stops drinking permanently without undergoing a profound personality change." Nakken discusses three stages of addiction: internal change, lifestyle change, and life breakdown. He also examines the process of recovery and the family component of addiction. He reveals what all addictions have in common, whether it's drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, or whatever. Craig A. Evans (PhD, Claremont) is an internationally known and respected New Testament scholar, apologist and author who serves as the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University. He has written extensively on the historical Jesus and the Jewish background of the New Testament era. A prolific writer, Evans has published more than seventy books and over 500 journal articles and reviews, and his books have been translated into several languages. His academic and popular books include Jesus and the Jihadis, Fabricating Jesus, From Jesus to the Church: The First Christian Generation, Jesus, The Final Days: What Really Happened (co-authored with N. This volume is in the huge series from IVP on all areas of the bible. This book is a must have for any series pastor or student of the NT. I have used this several times in my study for sermons, papers, or just general questions I have had regarding background issues and the NT. I gave it 4/5 stars due to the need for a second edition. The editors at IVP have already processed the printing of a 2nd edition of Jesus and the Gospels, and I think it's time for a second edition of this volume as well. That being said, you cannot down play the significance of this volume and the series.

WHile this is a recent purchase, I have looked up several topics and have been very satisfied at the scholarship and thoroughness. For example, there were 7 pages of explanation on Messianic ideas and their development in the time of our Lord. Any Bible teacher of the Gospels would especially benefit in preparations by gaining valuable background information.

Tremendous amount of information. Very thorough.

I have purchased most of these books for my husband and they are all very good and helpful.I cannot elaborate on content, but he is a religion major and all of these have been super helpful and chalk full of information.

This book is informative and a must have as it helps to explain some of the traditions and perhaps what the author may have been trying to convey. The book is set up by chapter and verse!

I started my business twenty five years ago but it was another five-or-so years until I started actively using my financial statements to manage it. Once I started, my world changed, all of a sudden I had the tools I needed to understand why I was underachieving and what I could do about it. Like Jim says in his book, most small businesses have the wherewithal to generate the numbers, it’s compiling them and then understanding and using them that sets apart the successful businesses from the unsuccessful ones. I’ve never seen a anything on this subject before for small business owners, Jim’s book should be required reading for all of us. I’m giving Jim’s book a solid five stars, if there were more stars to award, I’d give them too.

I love the short, concise books that this company offers. I’m the COO of a small business, I’ve used Jim Schell’s financial statement book to help me understand what makes our business work and then manage it appropriately. I am not usually one for non-fiction but The Class was (if I may coin a word) unputdownable. The book tells the story of one year in a high school science class in Greenwich, Connecticut, and while that may seem like a dry subject, it was anything but. The author had an incredible ability to get you invested in the characters, who, in addition to being ambitious and driven budding scientists, are also teenage kids navigating social pressures, annoying parents, college applications, and all the other teenage experiences we all remember. The real genius of the book is that, because of the way that the characters are developed and you get to know them outside of the classroom, you actually end up deeply invested in the outcomes of their science projects too! And in framing the book around the "science fair circuit"--a series of high-stakes competitions that take place around the end of the school year--the author has managed to infuse the story with a compelling narrative arc, a brisk pace, and a satisfying coda. On top of that, she writes beautifully and the book is full of vivid descriptive passages that are still stuck in my head months after reading it. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This is a wonderfully written book about an amazing teacher, ruined by extraneous snarky remarks against President Trump and the First Lady. These comments smack of coastal elitism and are served up without any context relating to the story being told.Authors need to understand that not all readers suffer from TDS. (trump derangement syndrome)

In a troubled world it’s great to read about individuals who make a difference. Great teachers are under-appreciated. Andrew Bramante is a special influence professionally and personally. I’m lucky to know his family and admire their dedication to balancing education and family. These are remarkable kids Andy worked with and they all deserve recognition.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is an excellent introduction to great teaching. In our modern educational debate, people suggest a number of things they hope will fix the problems in our education system: more funding, better teacher training, vouchers, more funding for charters, better accountability, common core, improved regulations, etc. None of these actually help students very much. The one thing that nearly always helps students--immediately and in a way that last--is better teaching. The Class does an excellent job of showing how great teaching works and how it can make a significant difference. Very worth reading.On the other hand, the system in which the book takes place is very disappointing. The focus of the students, and usually the teachers, in this book so often centers on winning contests, beating the competition posed by other students, impressing universities, and trying to win more contests. Most of the time, when a contest is mentioned, the amount of money the student can win is immediately listed. In this version of education, contests and winning money are the center of the whole educational experience. And parents are just as focused on this as students and most teachers. A love of learning, the joy of knowledge, ideas, gaining wisdom, trying to learn about the most important things in history and life--these are hardly mentioned. As if they aren't even a part of learning. Disappointing.If this really is the modern schooling system, and if this is what school is like for the "best of the best" in America's award-winning schools and classrooms, our nation is in trouble. Almost nothing about great learning or great ideas. It's all winning awards and trying to impress others. Mostly devoid of entrepreneurship, innovation, or leadership education. The focus is conveyor belt, factory-style schools. And ribbons. Learning isn't the point; just checking off bureaucratic boxes, winning awards, and trying to out-impress "the other drones". Sorry to say it so bluntly, and maybe the students covered in the stories don't experience it this way (I hope not), but this is how it felt reading the book. Sad.Of course, someone is going to say: "That's reality. That's just the way education is today. Get real." I know this is true in many, perhaps most, schools. But that's even more sad. I think the role of great teachers should be to help students see past the conveyor-belt drive to win awards and to discover the greatness of loving to learn. Maybe that's too idealistic. But still: Carpe Diem. I think, reading between the lines, that this is the kind of teacher Andy (the main character in the book) is in real life. That's why he's had such success, I bet. I just wish the story would have showed more of this. Still, it's a great read. Anyone interested in education will find this a valuable resource.

The book has some useful tips that I can easily apply.Well put! I’m surprised to see a free bonus at the end of the book. Nice gift from the author.

The author introduces a method of rhythmic ingesting and digestion to help with body detoxification and burning fat. Sounds good, now if I can implement. Jon Derek Croteau is a senior consultant with Witt/Kieffer, the single largest executive search and leadership solutions firm specializing in health care, education, and not-for-profit organizations committed to improving the quality of life. He is also adjunct professor at The University of Rochester in the Warner Graduate School of Education. He is the author of The People First Approach, a guide to recruiting, developing and retaining the right people, and has published numerous articles on strategic talent management in higher education. Zachary A. Smith is assistant vice chancellor of development at the University of California, Riverside. He also consults with higher education institutions on talent management and organizational research projects. Previously, he was the senior director of strategic talent management & initiatives for university advancement at the University of California, Irvine. Great book for anyone that is in philanthropy or wants to get into the field. Very insightful and encouraging book.

A must read for advancement professionals aspiring to be or who are already chief advancement officers. In my opinion it is not just for those in higher education but also for large not for profits and national charities.

It is a good, not great, book.

While the subtitle indicates that its focus is on chief advancement officers, and this is true, for me this is an important book on generic leadership, right up there with Jim Collins, although different in its organization and research foundations. The ten case studies are revealing with respect to consistent patterns of effective leadership, and persuasive in this consistency. I found the writing exceptional. Croteau and Smith consistently maintain the vitality and directness of the active voice in their writing. It was amazing to me how, even in the course of an outlined set of interview headings, they gave each of the interview respondents his or her own voice. In fact, I had to check to see that, indeed, the headings were the same from chapter to chapter. I am recommending this book highly to my doctoral students in educational administration.

Jon Derek Croteau and Zach Smith have done a masterful job in handling a difficult subject. Kudos!!
